OK…I found myself spouting platitudes last night while talking to Courtney.

She’s going through kind of a rough time in Teen Girl World. She’s trying to be true to her friends by not pursuing boys that her friends are also interested in. Also, she’s trying to figure out boys in general and why they’re not interested in her the way she’s interested in them.

Oh – the clichés that spouted forth from my mouth. She argued with me the way I argued with adults who tried to tell me that my despair wouldn’t last forever. Like me, she didn’t believe that any man would ever love her or want her.

I know in my heart that a man will want her someday. She’s full of life, yet pretty sensible. She’s funny, she’s kind, she’s smart, and she’s got a sweet spirit. She’s a beautiful girl (even though she’s my niece, she really is a nice-looking kid).

I told her that her mom and I went through the same things she’s going through now. That didn’t bring much comfort because, as you know, “IT’S DIFFERENT!!!”

I guess this is what the great sages mean when they say “You can’t heal all wounds”. She goes on through life – she’s not despondent or lacking for friends or anything – but she still wonders why boys are the way they are.

I even tried to use an analogy comparing her with classical music – i.e. that sometimes people don’t appreciate something or think it’s worthwhile until a long time after. So Courtney says, “Oh, so I have to wait until I DIE?!”

Ya can’t win this kind of argument, y’all. THIS is why I have cats.

But her mother and I, as well as Grandma Mary and D and the rest of the family, think she’s wonderful and priceless. I just wish I could tell her that boys are nice, but there are other good things in life. I wish I could just sit her down and say, "Look, right now these guys are still wanting to play with Matchbox cars...they can't be trusted with anything until they're at least 25."

But I wouldn’t have believed me either, back in the day.

Life…grrr…
