Patchwork Thursday
My 2nd husband did me a favor (?) this morning.
God Bless him.
What kind of favor did he do for me?
He reminded me about today being the 25th anniversary of the assassination attempt on President Reagan by John Hinckley. Therefore, he inadvertently reminded me that it has been (drum roll please…) 25 years since I’ve been in the 6th grade.
OH GOD.
Twenty-five years since the 6th grade. Do you know what that means?
1. Twenty-five years since I found out who shot J.R.
2. Twenty-five years since I tried to sneak around and read Judy Blume’s book Forever . I think I finally succeeded the summer before 7th grade, and moved on to Wifey by the summer before 8th grade.
3. Twenty-five years since I found out who Eldridge Cleaver was and actually did a report on him.
4. Twenty-five years since I sang my very first solo. I didn’t tell my mom about it so she’d be surprised. However, I sang this song at a place called Orchard Hill, which was a home for developmentally disabled people. Some guy in the back started screaming when I was singing…can you say "harbinger of doom?"
5. Twenty-five years since I was first initiated into the International Order of Rainbow for Girls at age 12. Let’s just say that, looking back, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Not now.
How does the time fly by so fast? And if it flies this fast for ME (and I’ve done relatively little with my life), I can’t even begin to imagine how much it flies for someone older than me.
Wow.
Other thoughts…
** In the continued vein of musicals that need to be produced or revived, why don’t the powers that be do a TV movie remake of “Damn Yankees” already? I mean, we had to watch Bette Midler traipse around doing her damnedest to channel Ethel Merman in the TV remake of “Gypsy”, and they did “Bye Bye Birdie”, “Cinderella”, “Once Upon a Mattress” and “Annie” – why not “Damn Yankees”? I already know who could play the three big parts:
1. Mr. Applegate (The Devil) could be played by:
Victor Garber
Eric McCormack (from “Will and Grace”)
Sean Hayes (from “Will and Grace”)
Hugh Laurie (from “House”)
2. Lola (Gwen Verdon’s character) could be played by:
Christina Applegate
Jennifer Lopez (If she’d stoop to TV)
Christina Aguilera (if she’d stoop to TV)
Rosario Dawson (same as the previous two)
3. Joe the ballplayer:
Freddie Prinze Jr. (he dyed his hair blonde for “Scooby Doo”, right?)
Colin Hanks (if he’d stoop to TV, plus be able to sing and dance)
Anthony Rapp (same “stoop to TV” deal)
Justin Timberlake (he needs the work)
See, if people would just listen to me, this world would be a better place (as far as musical theater is concerned)!
