And that's the truth...bpthththththtt
I'm just as pleased as punch to write some simple Sudiegirl life commentary this morning. I've got to have something to do before I go in the bedroom and violently waken my future husband. Hee hee hee
Anyway, we have a miracle going on here in DC metro area today...two days in a row of sunshine! Who'd have thunk it?
Well, I start my new job tomorrow, PLUS...the morning guys at 94.7 The Arrow (a classic rock station here in DC...I've plugged them a few times here at Rancho Sudiegirl) like my writing and we're working together to develop some new things for their morning show. I must say, I don't think my English teachers really expected this kind of thing from one of their favorite underachievers. Prison time, maybe, but not this. I sent the boys (Stevens and Medley) a sample after we had an initial lunchtime "getting to know you" type meeting (very nice guys, BTW, and quite funny) and they were happy with it. Now, it's just a matter of mechanics, logistics, etc.
Now I've got Prince playing on my computer...what a way to start a Sunday morning with everyone's favorite provocateur turned Jehovah's Witness. Actually, I respect ol' Prince on many levels. Not the symbol as name thing (I'm still convinced that it's pronounced "Ziggy", but everyone else laughs at me when I say that so I keep that crackpot theory to myself), but other things.
What, pray tell, would those things be?
Well, number one, if there's another musician/singer he likes and wants to help them get started, he does it! Sheila E, Rosie Gaines, Appolonia...he helps promote them, and they aren't flashes in the pan, so to speak. Sheila E is a hell of a percussionist, and Rosie Gaines can sing her ass off. Appolonia...well, you can't have everything.
Two, he's an innovator, musically speaking...I didn't realize it until I was much older, but he does so many interesting things on his tracks. For example, one thing I never noticed (until I was older and took the time to read the liner notes on "The Hits One") is that "When Doves Cry" has no bass line whatsoever. It just seemed so pulled together, I didn't miss the bass line.
Prince's lyrics are good too...one of my favorite tunes from "Sign 'o The Times" is "Starfish and Coffee". It's all about this free-spirited girl in a kindergarten class that wears mismatched socks and stands at the back of the line with "a smile beneath her nose". The last line..."Cynthia wore a happy face, just like the one she draws on every wall in every school, it's all right...it's for a worthy cause." Granted, it's not oozing sex like some of his others, but it's cool. Even the oozing sex songs have good lyrics. I'll never be able to think of a lone female sitting in a hotel lobby again without thinking of "Darling Nikki".
Well, enough of Prince and his virtues...
I've gotta go eat breakfast.
