Shiny Happy Tuesday, and the klutz curse has been broken!

Procrastination Has A Price
(Well, can I pay it back later?)

I know an 8th grader who is floating on air today.

Yep, my niece Courtney made Color Guard. Not junior high color guard, nosiree. This is the big time – HIGH SCHOOL COLOR GUARD. She’ll be marching with the Washington High School marching band come fall.

This is big stuff. She has worked hard for this, and she achieved it. Moreover, she has broken the “klutz curse” that has plagued my sister and I for so long.

If you think I’m being too hard on my sister and myself, consider these episodes, if you will:

1. My sister stepped on her own hand at the starting line at a track meet. She was wearing track cleats. Needless to say, it hurt.

2. I discovered (as a senior in high school) that I am not “aerodynamically sound”. I am also not meant for cheerleading. Our football team won a game against our rival, and I attempted to do some kind of victory jump. Landed on the ground whilst turning my ankle, I did. Then my friends and I drove around after the game because that’s what you do, and they took great delight in taking corners really fast so I’d skid around in back. What great friends I had back then…

3. I have walked into telephone poles, doors, door frames, and tripped over those wire gate things that go around plants outside.

4. My grandma wanted us to have tumbling and dance lessons when we were young, and we did. (Note that I didn’t claim we were at the top of our class.) One day, Grandma and Mom came to class and Grandma finally said, “Maybe this isn’t such a good idea after all.” That was the end of our formal dance training. That was OK because then we could stay up late on Friday nights and watch “Creature Feature” on Channel 9.

So really, this whole color guard thing is quite a feat. Since I don’t have kids, the curse ends with me, but Ruthie has truly been blessed with children that have some amount of physical grace.

Maybe I can stand next to Courtie and have some of it rub off on me. That’d be refreshing, no?
